Introduction to Mountaineering Adventure Program – Winter 2020/21

Introduction to Mountaineering Adventure Program (IMAP) is designed for children ages 12-17.

For 20 years, our school has been introducing children to mountaineering through our high quality group trips.

The 5 different levels of our program are designed to:

  • Provide safe, quality adventures for participants of all ability levels
  • Create a fun and supportive environment for participants, enabling them to make new friends
  • Visit New England’s most exciting natural landmarks
  • Teach participants essential outdoor wilderness skills
  • Develop or boost self-confidence in participants

 

Level 1: Hiking and Wilderness Skills.

No prior experience necessary

In this level students participate in mild day hiking trips to White Mountains and various National Parks in NH and MA.

Topics Covered:

  1. How to dress and equip oneself properly for trips in any weather conditions
  2. Building a campfire, and cooking on it
  3. Navigating different types of terrain
  4. Reading maps and using a compass

December 12, Saturday (Crawford Notch, NH)

December 19, Saturday (White Mountains Kancamagus, NH)

Level 2: Moderate Mountaineering

Hiking to the Top of the Mountains under 4000 ft. No prior experience necessary

Topics Covered:

  1. Enduring longer trails to mountain summits
  2. Using crampons and ice axes
  3. Navigation skills with maps and compasses
  4. Leadership skills
  5. Solving mock emergency problems
  6. Building a campfire in any conditions and cooking on it

December 6, Sunday (Mt.Chocorua, NH)

December 13, Sunday (Mt.Cannon, NH)

December 20, Sunday (Mt.Moat, NH)

January/February dates TBA

Cost: $60

 

Level 3: Technical Ice Climbing and Mountaineering Techniques

No prior experience necessary

Topics Covered:

  1. Top rope ice climbing on moderate and vertical terrain
  2. Proper use of crampons, ice tools, ropes, and other equipment
  3. Building anchors using ice screws and V-threads
  4. Advanced ice climbing techniques

Dates:

This program will start in January (dates TBA)

Cost: $60

 

Level 4: Hiking/Climbing Mountains above 4000ft

Previous participation in at least 1 trip for Level 1 AND Level 2 is required to qualify

Topics Covered

  1. Hiking to the top of some of the most beautiful mountains of New England;
  2. Organizing personal gear and equipment for the climb;
  3. Dealing with brutal NE mountain weather, survival skills;
  4. Leadership skills and group organizing;

This program will start in January (dates TBA)

Cost: $60

 

Level 5: Winter Camping and Mountaineering (February School vacation 2021)

Previous participation in at least 1 trip in EACH of the 4 previous levels is required to qualify

What to Bring for day trips:
– Hand sanitizer and a mask/facial covering
– Backpack
– Hiking boots and mini spike crampons
– Winter quality clothes: warm jacket and layers, a hat, gloves, warm pants and layers
– Rain gear (poncho or rain jacket and pants)
– Food and drinks for the day (breakfast, lunch, snacks, water and hot drinks in a thermos)
– Waiver form (printed and signed)
When we go to NH: Pick up (7am) and Drop off (6pm) will be at Park and Ride Exit 42. RT.93
When we stay locally we may meet at the place or do some carpooling
